Overview of the corpus
The first version of this corpus, under the LETEC standard -
corpus for learning -, (Chanier, T. & Wigham, C.R. , 2011) may be downloaded
from Mulce website with the code
oai:mulce.org:mce-archi21-letec-all. From the original corpus have
been extracted part of the interactions (all reflexive sessions) which occurred in
Second Life between the course participants. The initial corpus has been converted
to the TEI standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication
médiée par les réseaux)
Keywords : Computer Mediated Communication; CMC; Synthetic environments; avatar; collaborative learning; multimodality; online language learning; LETEC;

Coverage: nbparticipants=18 + 4 groups ; This corpus contains a total of 4811 acts classified
as follows: 1690 audio acts, 669 chat acts, 2452 production (non verbal) acts. It
includes 27 912 tokens
Rationale for this corpus
The Archi 21 projet (Architectural and Design Based Education and
Practice Through Content and Language Integrated Learning Using Immersive Virtual
Environments for 21st Century Skills)seeks to provide innovative methods and
materials supporting second language learning through a content and language
integrated approach (CLIL) merged integrated with architectural and design education
and practice and the use of emerging ICT technologies. Building Fragile Spaces was
the first pilot course for Archi21 project. It was a hybrid (face-to-face and
distance) CLIL design studio held on 7-11 February 2011 and designed by architecture
tutors from l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris-Malaquais and
language tutors from Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France. The
face-to-face part of the course is typical within the field of architectural
education: professionals work in small groups with students, over a short period,
developing design ideas. The innovative distance French and English L2 activities of
the studio incorporated both architectural and linguistic objectives and were
conducted in the synthetic world Second Life. The use of the Second Life environment
stemmed from a conviction that 3D synthetic worlds are an exciting new design field
for architectural experimentation. The course had the project-oriented goal of
developing working models for spatial archetypes, landscapes and identity to be
employed as both its technical infrastructure and spatial, graphic expression. The
pedagogical scenario for the language activities (which can be dowloaded from the
LETEC corpus oai:mulce.org:mce-archi21-letec-all) included introductory
sessions to Second Life and to building collaboratively in the synthetic world, and a
series of group reflective sessions inworld (Only the later sessions are included in
this corpus cmr-archi21-tei-v1).
'Building Fragile Spaces' involved eight female and nine male
students, aged between 21 years and one month and 25 years and 8 months. Students
ranged from first year undergraduates to second year Masters' students. French was
the mother tongue of nine of the seventeen students. The mother tongues of the
remaining eight were: Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Korean and Arabic. The participants
were divided into four workgroups. This division was thematic and linguistic: each
workgroup received a different architectural brief and had a dominant second
language. Two workgroups, studying the themes of '(e)spaces' (es / GE) and
'scenarios' (sc / GS) in Second Life had English as their target language (ESL) and
two groups studying the themes of 'avatars' (av / GA) and 'land+scapes' (ls / GL) had
French as their target language (FLE). One French and one English language tutor
participated in the course alongside a French architecture tutor and an American
architecture tutor. The students and the architecture tutors were co-present in the
physical classroom. However, the English and French language tutors met with the
students inworld, connecting to Second Life at a distance.
Interactions included into the original LETEC corpus
(oai:mulce.org:mce-archi21-letec-all ) have been converted to the TEI
standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication médiée par les
réseaux)
. This project aims at assembling
different corpora that are representative of various types of network communication
(Internet, phone, etc.), all structured and informed in the same manner, broadcasted
in free-access for research aims. The CoMeRe project is supported by ORTOLANG and the
national consortium Corpus-écrits.
The TEI structure used is an extension of TEI for CMC genres. This
extension is developped by a European project which participants are : Michael
Beißwenger (DE), Thierry Chanier (FR), Isabella Chiari (IT), Maria Ermakova (DE),
Maarten van Gompel (NL), Iris Hendrickx (NL), Axel Herold (DE), Henk van den Heuvel
(NL), Lothar Lemnitzer (DE), Angelika Storrer (DE).
Editorial procedures
The corpus has been segmented into 4 TEI, one per leaner group (see
description in particDesc. Every TEI contains a group
which is divided into other groups, one per reflective session. One
session may correspond to several videos. Hence within the bottom level
group, there are as many texts as transcribed videos. This
later level of text contains an elemaent front with the timeline
of the coresponding video, and a body with the transcription in TEI-CMC.
All videos are listed in sourceDesc and can be downloaded separatly. For
explanations on transcription see tagUsage and taxonomy

This corpus is made of interactions between participants (learners,
tutors) during the online Archi21 experiment (2011) focusing on second language
learning through a content and language integrated approach (CLIL) with architectural
and design education. All these interactions happened within the Second Life
environment. In Second Life, they are made of verbal actions (textchat turns, audio
turn), and non-verbal ones (actions on objects, or related to avatars). Participants
were organized in small groups. All details about groups are in particDesc.

photo quand la caméra est n'est pas dans le même point de vue du du avatar pour les comparer pour voir euh
même la vue de l'avatar et sa position dans l'espace où il est
