Overview of the corpus
The first version of this corpus, under the LETEC standard - corpus
for learning -, (Chanier, T., Reffay, C., Betbeder, M-L., Ciekanski, M. & Lamy, M-N.
(2009)) may be downloaded from Mulce website
with the code oai:mulce.org:mce.copeas.lectec.all. From the original corpus
have been extracted all the interactions between the course participants. The initial
corpus has been converted to the TEI standard in the project CoMeRe
(Communication médiée par les réseaux)

Coverage: nbparticipants=16 + 2 groups ; This corpus contains a total of 15074 acts classified
as follows: 7718 audio acts, 1566 chat acts, 5790 production acts. It includes 127228
tokens
Rationale for this corpus
The Copéas (Communication pédagogique en environnement orienté audio
synchrone) course took place in a Masters' degree in open and distance learning at the
Université de Franche-Comté in 2005. The course (Master FOAD) is intended for those who
want to pursue a career in education and training, either in the private or the public
sector. One of the distinguishing features of this course of study is that it combines the
development of both technical and pedagogical knowledge and competences. Course
regulations prescribe the study of a foreign language (L2), and the course must include at
least 20 hours of L2 use. Our project offered a way of meeting this requirement. Broadly
speaking, it aimed to enable learners to develop a critical understanding of web-based
learning while simultaneously helping them talk and write about the web in English. The
Copéas course was intensive and lasted 10 weeks. Students, during 8 sessions, engaged in
60 to 80 minutes of tutored synchronous online discussion (in Lyceum) per week. The Copéas
course used a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. Learners
joined the course from home and used their own computer and connection. In each
session, learners were working alternatively in whole group in the same Lyceum room and in
subgroup in distinct rooms.
The learners were a group of 14 students, These learners carried out
self-evaluation of their English language skills and consequently made two groups: false
beginners (group T) and intermediate to advanced learners (group R). The two teachers of
the course were English native speakers from Open University’s Institute of Educational
Technology and its Department of Languages. Both teachers had experience of teaching
languages, including English as a foreign language. However, while one of them was
extremely familiar with teaching and moderating online, the other one was a newcomer to
e-teaching. After an initial ice-breaking session, the syllabus focused on criticising a
number of educational websites through the prism of such standard criteria as context,
authorship, and authority; design principles and features; technical structure; level of
interactivity and quality indicators. Learners then moved from reviewing websites to
formulating their own guidelines for educational website design and thence to an
evaluation of the two environments they had themselves been using. Whereas tutor T stuck
to the scenario, tutor R took some liberties with it.
Interactions included into the original LETEC corpus
(oai:mulce.org:mce-copeas-letec-all ) have been converted to the TEI
standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication médiée par les réseaux)
. This project aims at assembling different
corpora that are representative of various types of network communication (Internet,
phone, etc.), all structured and informed in the same manner, broadcasted in free-access
for research aims. The CoMeRe project is supported by ORTOLANG and the national consortium
Corpus-écrits.
The TEI structure used is an extension of TEI for CMC genres. This
extension is developped by a European project which participants are : Michael Beißwenger
(DE), Thierry Chanier (FR), Isabella Chiari (IT), Maria Ermakova (DE), Maarten van Gompel
(NL), Iris Hendrickx (NL), Axel Herold (DE), Henk van den Heuvel (NL), Lothar Lemnitzer
(DE), Angelika Storrer (DE).
Editorial procedures
The corpus has been segmented into 2 TEI (one per group). In each one, the
front of the first text cotains the timeline of the 8 sessions. The
groupincludes 8 text, one per session. Every session contains a set
of sequences. Since sequences may happen in different conference room within Lyceum,
they have been organized into time-spaces. A time-space correspond to on an line
location where interactions happend continuously. A div corresponds to a
time-space and generally includes several sequences. Transcriptions of the interactions
have been made out of videos. There are referenced within the head of the
division. All videos are listed in sourceDesc. For explanations on
transcription see tagUsage and taxonomy
