Overview of the corpus

The first version of this corpus, under the LETEC standard - corpus for learning -, (Abendroth-Timmer, D., Bechtel, M., Chanier T. & Ciekanski, M. , 2010)) may be downloaded from Mulce website with the code oai:mulce.org:mce.simu.all.all. From the original corpus have been extracted all the interactions between the participants to INFRAL. The initial corpus has been converted to the TEI standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication médiée par les réseaux) . This project aims at assembling different corpora that are representative of various types of network communication (Internet, phone, etc.), all structured and informed in the same manner, broadcasted in free-access for research aims. The CoMeRe project is supported by ORTOLANG and the national consortium Corpus-écrits. ;

Rationale for this corpus

This corpus is an extract (blogs messages) of the LEarning and TEaching Corpus Infral based on the online experiment Interculturel Franco-Allemand en Ligne. As its name indicates, it is a project that was carried out jointly by two research teams, a German and a French one.

The pedagogical scenario has been described in format MOTPLUS (and HTML version) in (Abendroth-Timmer, D., Bechtel, M., Chanier T. & Ciekanski, M. , 2010). All guidelines for learners and tutors are included.

During the Infral training, two groups are implicated, a group of ten francophone learners from l’Université de Franche-Comté (UFC) and a group of nine German-speaking learners from the university of Bremen (UB). These ninteen study French as a Foreign language (FFL) in order to become teachers of French. Each group follows, on one hand, a classroom course, in its home-university, with professor Maud Ciekanski in France and Mark Bechtel in Germany. In the classroom, each learner plays the role of learner and the teacher has the role of teacher. On the other hand, the learners from both universities meet and work together online. This group-work is done in quadrem-groups of, usually, two French-speaking and two German-speaking learners, and a tutor.

In the quadrem, the learners have a role of quadrem learner. The teacher is the tutor of the quadrem: Maud was the tutor of the quadrems 1 and 3, and Mark was the tutor of the quadrem 2 and 4. In order to create the quadrems, the teachers and researchers have ensured that at least one native French-speaker and one native German-speaker be present in each quadrem. Indeed, in each university there are students coming from other cultures. The main aim of the training was to develop intercultural competences and this work being based on French and German native documents, it was necessary that each culture be represented within a quadrem.

The learners of the quadrem interacted in written form on the blog of the Blogger system that had been assigned to them. On this blog, they could assume the role of authors and post messages that they needed to label and to classify within a thread. Besides, they could answer messages and post comments. They also could read the messages and comments of the other quadrems’ blogs. The tutor could post messages and comments on his/hers quadrem’s blog as well.

The learners of the quadrem could discuss orally on a multimodal audio-synchroned platform (Centra). On this platform, they could talk, post Power Point documents, write on a blackboard, chat, and use various buttons in order to ask to speak, to vote, to applaud or to laugh.

Through the different steps of the teaching scenario, the learners had to discuss various intercultural topics and then design an intercultural activity to be done during a French as a Foreign language course with the mates of the same quadrem. The main objective of this training was to allow these students developing their intercultural competence due to i) the asynchronous (on the blog) and synchronous (on the audio-graphic platform) interaction with the other learners; ii) a reflexive work on these interactions. Another advantage for the students was to learn how to use different modes of online communication. Besides, inasmuch as the interactions were both in French and in German, this helped German-speaking students to embetter their French language skills, and French-speaking students to develop strategies of comprehension of a foreign language (German).

This corpus is a subpart of the CoMeRe corpus databank. The CoMeRe (Communication Médiée par les Réseaux) project aims to build a kernel corpus assembling existing corpora of different CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) genres and new corpora build on data extracted from the Internet. These heterogenous corpora will be structured and processed in a uniform way, complemented with metadata. CoMeRe will be released as OpenData through the national infrastructure Ortolang, following constraints which will be reused for the forthcoming “Corpus de Référence du Français”. Project supported by the national consortium Corpus-écrits, sub-part of Huma-Num, and Ortolang (French correspondant to DARIAH).

The TEI structure used is an extension of TEI for CMC genres. This extension is developped by a European project which participants are : Michael Beißwenger (DE), Thierry Chanier (FR), Isabella Chiari (IT), Maria Ermakova (DE), Maarten van Gompel (NL), Iris Hendrickx (NL), Axel Herold (DE), Henk van den Heuvel (NL), Lothar Lemnitzer (DE), Angelika Storrer (DE).
