Overview of the corpus

The first version of this corpus, under the LETEC standard - corpus for learning -, (Chanier, T. & Audras, I. , 2011) may be downloaded from Mulce website with the code oai:mce-tridem06-letec-all. From the original corpus have been extracted all the interactions (within an audiographic environment and in blogs) between the course participants. The initial corpus has been converted to the TEI standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication médiée par les réseaux)

Coverage: nbparticipants=62 + 12 groups (tridems) ; This corpus contains a total of 4894 acts classified as follows: 2809 audio acts, 248 chat acts, 1058 production acts, 779 blog messages. It includes 184 594 tokens

Rationale for this corpus

Data come from an online course which occurred from October to December 2006, over 10 weeks. A unique pedagogical team was built upon the collaboration between 3 institutions: Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) , United States of America, The Open University (OU), Unighted Kingdom, and Université de Franche-Comté (UFC), France. Learners were gathered in small groups, entitled "tridems", with members coming from every 3 institutions. 12 tridems were created.

Our project belongs to two research areas, distance education and the development of intercultural competence in online multicultural group exchanges. Recent publications proved the interest raised by such issues, and also the difficulties encountered. O'Dowd and Ritter found 10 criteria related to these difficulties. We extract a particularly relevant one, the pedagogical scenario, which we study here. The Tridem06 experiment is described with its scenario designed by a multi-institutional team and based on Byram's model of intercultural competence (the learning scenario can be found in the LETEC (Chanier & Audras, 2011) oai : mulce.org:mce-tridem06-letec-all ). When analysing the multimodal contents of the interactions, extracted from synchronous and asynchronous environments used by participants, we establish a correspondence with the five savoirs of the intercultural competence model.

Interactions included into the original LETEC corpus (oai:mulce.org:mce-tridem06-letec-all ) have been converted to the TEI standard in the project CoMeRe (Communication médiée par les réseaux) . This project aims at assembling different corpora that are representative of various types of network communication (Internet, phone, etc.), all structured and informed in the same manner, broadcasted in free-access for research aims. The CoMeRe project is supported by ORTOLANG and the national consortium Corpus-écrits.

The TEI structure used is an extension of TEI for CMC genres. This extension is developped by a European project which participants are : Michael Beißwenger (DE), Thierry Chanier (FR), Isabella Chiari (IT), Maria Ermakova (DE), Maarten van Gompel (NL), Iris Hendrickx (NL), Axel Herold (DE), Henk van den Heuvel (NL), Lothar Lemnitzer (DE), Angelika Storrer (DE).

Editorial procedures

The corpus has been segmented into one text which front contains the timeline of all the synchronous sessions (in Lyceum an audiographic environment) which have been transcribed. The body is then divided into div: one per blogs (12 learners tridems plus one general blog) and one per synchronous session. Transcriptions of the interactions have been made out of videos. They are referenced within the head of the division. All videos are listed in sourceDesc. For explanations on transcription see tagUsage and taxonomy
